Behind the culture chain

Why we do what we do

I spent nine years as a professional rugby player, across seven clubs and thirteen different head coaches. Wasps, Saracens, London Irish, London Scottish, the Seattle Seawolves in the US. Every one of those thirteen coaches was working with broadly the same talent pool and broadly the same resources. The gap between the teams that won and the teams that didn't almost never came down to individual ability. It came down to culture: how the environment was structured, what was tolerated, how pressure was handled, what happened the day after a bad result.

Alongside playing, I spent seven years using my days off running one-to-one performance sessions with senior managers, people who wanted the same mental edge under pressure that elite athletes train for. That's where I first saw how directly this stuff translates, and where the idea for The Culture Chain actually started.

I retired at 26. I'm 30 now. I took some time after retiring to work out what came next, and started The Culture Chain as a culture consultancy: talks, workshops, sessions on performance under pressure, drawing directly on what I'd learned from sport.

It didn't take long to find the limits of that approach. A lot of what works in elite sport is genuinely useful, but you can't lift a methodology built for a professional rugby squad and drop it into an accounting firm and expect it to work. The environments are too different: different pressures, different incentives, different definitions of a good day. Pretending otherwise is how consultancies end up selling inspiration instead of results.

So we rebuilt the model from the ground up for corporate teams specifically: rigorous, evidence-based, and metric-driven rather than borrowed wholesale from sport. That's what The Culture Chain is now, a team of consultants, all with performance backgrounds themselves, who go into a business, diagnose exactly what's holding a team back, and rebuild the structure and culture around it until the metrics that matter, revenue per head, time to proficiency, time to excellence, retention, actually move.

The instinct that started this business came from a rugby pitch. The method that makes it work was built for the businesses we actually work with.

For Long Term Engagements

Every partnership carries a guarantee: 5% improvement across every performance driver at 16 weeks, or we keep working at no extra cost.

However, due to the all-in nature of these programmes and the effort required to deliver results, we only ever take on 6 partners at any one time and it must be a good fit.
